History of the Name
eNkanyini
“Nkanyi” is the Xitsonga word for Marula.
“eNkanyini” therefore translates to “by the Marula tree.”
We’ve all seen the scenic bushveld, the sunset, perhaps an elephant or even a herd, and of course—the Marula tree—on our screens before, whether in an advertisement or a wildlife film. It’s an iconic Southern African scene.
A large to medium-sized tree, usually around 10 m tall, the Marula tree is deeply symbolic in Southern Africa. Traditionally, it has been a favoured meeting place for many village communities. Seen as a central point for connection and relationship-building, the Marula tree is considered a sacred tree, “never to be cut down.”
The name eNkanyini is fitting: it represents a place where we can stand as one. Like the symbolic Marula tree, eNkanyini embodies common ground, where we live together guided by our core values: integrity, family, growth, and diversity.
Just as Southern African village communities gathered under the Marula tree, so too can we meet at our own Marula tree – our home – eNkanyini.
